Patient Benefits to Digital X-Rays

With recent advances in dental technology, we have been able to greatly improve our patient treatment methods. One of the most beneficial sources of modern technology to hit the dental industry is the use of digital x-rays, which make dental exams easier, safer, and much more convenient for our patients. At Dr. Stypula’s periodontist office in Pittsburgh, PA, we have embraced the use of digital x-rays to ensure our patients have a favorable visit.

How It Works

The process for digital x-rays is actually quite similar to the traditional method for dental x-rays. Dr. Stypula inserts a small sensor into your mouth that will take images of your teeth. This sensor isn’t using film, however, as most traditional x-ray machines do; instead the sensor is electric and connects directly to a computer. Immediately after the image is captured, it’s displayed on the computer screen for Dr. Stypula to review.

The Benefits

There are many benefits to using digital x-rays in our dental office. These include:

  • Less radiation. Digital x-rays use up to 90 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays.
  • Shorter appointments. When dentists use traditional film x-rays, patients are forced to wait for the film to develop before the dentist can review the results. Digital x-rays are instantly ready with the push of a button, so the waiting time (and overall appointment time) is greatly reduced.
  • High-quality images. Since images are immediately transferred to a computer screen, they can be magnified and enlarged. Dr. Stypula can also alter the color, brightness, and contrast on the screen to get a better picture of the teeth.
  • Environmentally friendly. Digital x-rays don’t require any chemicals to be used or processing rooms that take up unnecessary space.
